LSI Testing Symposium 2008 , Senri Life Science Center, Osaka, Japan

The 28th annual LSI Testing Symposium was held in Osaka, Japan with participation of over 400 people in the field of semiconductor process metrology. Dr R Yoo, director of global sales and marketing of Park Systems, presented an invited talk on “Dimensional Nanometrology with Atomic Microscopy”. The audience was particularly excited by the realization of True Non-Contact AFM  and its application for measuring properties of photoresist samples. The groundbreaking features of Park Systems’ next-generation AFM which include measurement and imaging of vertical sidewall and undercut structures sparked huge interest from the participants.

International Scientific Instrument Technology Workshop , Instrument Technology Research Center, Hsinchu, Taiwan

The Instrument Technology Research Center (ITRC) of the National Applied Research Laboratories (NARL), Taiwan, has hosted “International Scientific Instrument Technology Workshop" (ISITW) since 1992. The workshop offers education and training on scientific instrument technology for selected professors, research scientists, engineers and graduate students of Association for Science Cooperation in Asia member countries.

Dr Sang-il Park, Park Systems’ CEO, gave an invited lecture on “Nanoscale Metrology and Characterizations with Advanced AFM/SPM” at the workshop. Dr Din Ping Tsai, Director General of ITRC, commented,” Dr Sang-il Park is a true pioneer in developing world-first commercial AFM. I cherish our long-standing friendship which first started in one of Dr Park’s lecture at Stanford University, USA. I am delighted to have him here with us for the workshop".

AFM has been used to assess properties of biological samples, especially its mechanical properties in nanometer scale. Due to its sensitive force detection, AFM is useful in differentiating the stiffness of single cells in culture and of in vitro myotubes. The images shown above are the normalized distributions of Young’s modulus of (a) wild-type and (b) dystrophic mice muscle. The distributions reveal that a significantly lower resistance of mdx muscles to reversible deformation (filled bars).  For comparison, distributions obtained from an adjacent section of the same muscle treated with cytochalasin D (gray bars) were presented at the same time.
